Are Tree Pod Burials the Next Thing in Eco-Friendly Burial?

Eco-friendly sendoffs are trending, and tree pod burials are an intriguing prospect that’s equal parts beautiful and practical. But what exactly are these egg-shaped caskets, and how would they work? Let’s dig in.

The Tree Pod Concept

Rather than a traditional casket, tree pods would be biodegradable vessels made from materials like bamboo, cotton, or even just a shroud.

The deceased would be placed inside in the fetal position — a symbolic rebirth of sorts. The pod could also contain enzymes and beneficial microbes to aid decomposition.

Two Options for Interment

Tree pods could be buried in a couple different ways:

  1. Under a New Sapling: The pod is placed in the ground and a young tree is planted over top, with the nutrients from the decomposing remains feeding the sapling as it grows.
  2. Within an Established Tree’s Root System: For a mature tree, the pod would nestle into the root area, replenishing the soil and nourishing the tree’s vast underground network.

While there’s a nice personal touch to option 1, established trees require less intensive care and are more likely to thrive with that nutrient boost.

Memorializing Your Loved One

If you’d find yourself choosing an existing tree, you could still honor your loved one’s memory in beautiful ways:

  • Plant flowers, shrubs, or a separate memorial tree nearby
  • Use natural markers like rocks or wood plaques
  • Create collaborative art pieces with family and friends
  • Note the GPS coordinates to easily revisit the gravesite

The cemetery can provide these types of memorial options.

Decomposition Does a Tree Good

As the pod and body gradually break down, it helps return useful components to the earth in a natural recycling process — no harsh chemicals or delays.

This would replenish the surrounding soil and vegetation. Since trees are connected by underground fungi that share nutrients, your loved one’s remains could literally become part of the entire forest ecosystem. How’s that for a beautiful legacy?

With options for both new and mature trees, customized memorials, and an eco-friendly approach, tree pod burial is an innovative future potential model for modern families to consider. It would truly connect us with nature’s cycles in a uniquely poetic way.
